Man-made carbon emissions (especially those emitted by the industrialised North) resulting from the burning of fossil fuels are heating up the earth and this heating effect is creating climate change. This is having a devastating effect on the environment.
In less than 200 years we will have used up the fossil fuels that took millennia to create. The impending liquid fuel crisis as oil production peaks and then declines, added to the imperative need to reduce carbon emissions, suggests that there is a bright future for generators of renewable energy.
The poorest of the poor have created virtually none of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change, but are the ones who will suffer most from its effects. Helping them to work their way out of poverty will improve their livelihoods and make them more resilient to extreme weather events.
